When is Dota 2 patch 7.42 coming out?
Most likely in November or December 2026: our waiting-time model gives 7.42 a 64% chance for November, 28% for December and 92% for the two months together.
This is an estimate from Valve's own patch history, not a date from Valve. The average wait between the last ten big patches is 149 days. The longest was 240 days, before 7.33 in April 2023. If 7.42 is not out by November 19, the wait for it becomes the longest since 2023. The tracker shows the whole timeline, the chance per month and a hype score that moves with every new signal.
What will Dota 2 patch 7.42 change?
Nobody outside Valve knows the notes, but the pattern is clear: 7.41 changed 126 heroes and 125 items in 1,674 lines, and the last five big patches changed 100 to 126 heroes each.
They also changed about 81 items on average, and the notes ran to about 1,150 lines. So expect a long read and new builds for almost every hero.
Two real signals point at new content. On September 11 Valve updated the Dota 2 staging server and its test client, which players read as a 7.42 test; four days later the smaller 7.41f came out instead. Earlier, two new map files, dota_mid and dota_keen, and a door object on the main river showed up in the game files.
The current meta gives Valve clear targets. In our newest pro meta report
Hoodwink leads the pro picks with 51, and
Bounty Hunter is banned 75 times. Heroes that get picked or banned in almost every pro game are the ones that usually change first.
Will 7.42 bring a new hero?
It is possible: 6 of the last 12 new heroes came out on the same day as a big patch, and the next hero is overdue too.
Largo, the newest hero, arrived with patch 7.40 on December 15, 2025. That is 323 days ago; the average gap between new heroes is 274 days. Our next hero tracker puts the next release between November 2026 and March 2027 with a 76% chance.
The name to watch is Arjun. Dataminers found it in Valve's hero data in December 2025, and patch 7.41 added a game file entry called modifier_arjun_chariot_mounted, which hints at a hero who rides a chariot. Valve has never shown the hero, so treat it as a rumor with a paper trail, not a fact.
What do players want from patch 7.42?
Pros want a new hero, an event mode, shorter matches and a limit on buybacks; readers vote on these and more in our wishlist.
SUNSfan asked for a new hero and an event mode, Noxville for shorter matches, Bafik and TORONTOTOKYO for a limit on buybacks. In our 7.42 wishlist readers vote on these and more; after one day, A new hero and Shorter games share the lead. One tap per wish, and the list sorts itself by votes.
